Prabakaran, who filed his nominations on Friday, gave a thousand Rs 10 coins to Election Officer Balakrishnan. On receiving the coins, the election officer asked the staff to count it and ensured it had Rs 10,000. His nominations were then received.

Explaining the motive behind the move, Prabakaran said though Rs 10 coin remains a legal tender, people and traders are not willing to accept it.

This was due to rumours that Rs 10 coin have become invalid. Despite the RBI raising awareness and even warning of action against institutions refusing to receive Rs 10 coin, there has been little change in the mindset of people.

“So, to create awareness among the public that Rs 10 coin is still a legal tender, I filed my nominations with it,” he said. Prabakaran is an organiser of the People’s Movement againstInjustice.

A total of 15 independents have filed their nominations for the Sulur by-polls, which was necessitated following the sudden demise of AIADMK MLA RKanagaraj.
