DMK’s Saravanan files papers to contest from Tiruparankundram
DMK candidate P Saravanan, who’s contesting from Tiruparankundram Assembly constituency, filed his nomination papers before Returning Officer Panchavarnam at Tiruparankundram taluk office in Madurai on Thursday. Earlier, he took out a rally with his supporters from Tirunagar to the RO’s office. Tiruparankundram is one of the four Assembly constituencies, which go to polls on May 19.

Kanimozhi, wife of Saravanan, filed her nomination as his dummy candidate subsequently. The filing of nominations began on April 22 and will conclude on April 29 as per notifications of the Election Commission. With just four days had gone by, seven candidates, including the one from the DMK had so far filed their nominations to contest from Tiruparankundram constituency. Candidates from other parties, including the ruling AIADMK and AMMK are yet to file their nominations, sources said.
The bypoll to Tiruparankundram constituency was necessitated following the death of AK Bose, who was a three time MLA of the AIADMK. Bose died of cardiac arrest in August, 2018 in Madurai. Earlier, he won from the same constituency, which witnessed a bypoll in November 2016 following the death of his predecessor SM Seenivelu.Seenivelu, who contested as an AIADMK candidate and won from Tiruparankundram constituency in 2016, died of illness before taking oath.
I Periyasamy, DMK’s election coordinator for this constituency, who accompanied the party candidate during the filing of the nominations, said DMK president MK Stalin had again given a chance to Saravanan to contest from Tiruparankundram.
He said the DMK could only deliver governance for the welfare of people and exuded confidence that DMK would win with a huge margin from this constituency in the ensuing bypoll. The victory for Secular Progressive Alliance was guaranteed and the change of governments at Centre and in state is for sure once the votes for the Lok Sabha and Assembly bypolls are counted on May 23, he added.
According to political sources,Tiruparankundram Assemblyconstituency was a stronghold of the ruling AIADMK.
