Anna University to hike tuition fee of colleges by 10 per cent
After a gap of more than 15 years, the State-owned Anna University is set to increase the tuition fees for its 13 constituent colleges from the coming academic year.
Chennai
According to sources, the hike was recommended by the fee structure committee that was appointed by the State government. Accordingly, the tuition fees for the students, who will be pursuing various engineering courses, is likely to increase by 10 per cent.
The decision was taken after a request from the representatives of constituent colleges which said that the hike in tuition fee was necessary as salaries of the staff have been increased.
“There are 13 constituent colleges functioning under Anna University. The long-pending proposal to hike the tuition fee was finalised at a recent syndicate meeting,” a senior administration official from the university told DT Next on Tuesday.
According to him, the university’s syndicate, the highest decision-making body, also adopted a resolution to increase the fee structure with effect from the coming academic year. The syndicate, headed by Vice-Chancellor MK Surappa, has seven members including the Higher Education Department principal secretary Mangat Ram Sharma and a secretary, who is the registrar of the university.
“Till last year, the students were paying between Rs 25,000 and Rs 30,000 as tuition fee. Now, the students will have to pay an additional Rs 3,000 per year,” he said. The official also revealed that even representatives of colleges affiliated to Anna University have requested the Vice-Chancellor to initiate measures to hike the fee in their institutions. “The request has been forwarded to the fees structure committee, which will decide it and would come out with a recommendation shortly,” he added.
It may be noted that tuition fees for affiliated colleges were hiked only in 2017.
PMK urges to drop decision
PMK leader S Ramadoss demanded the Anna University to drop the decision to increase the admission fees in its constituent colleges. “There are 13 constituent colleges functioning under Anna University. However, the infrastructure facilities like laboratories and classrooms in these colleges are not even one tenth of the facilities present in AU. Under the circumstances, it will not be right to hike the fees in the constituent colleges,” he said in a statement. While Anna University is collecting just Rs 10,000 as fees, the constituent colleges are already collecting Rs 30,000. Even if the fee is hiked by Rs 3,000, it will affect the dreams of rural students to pursue engineering, he added. As no other university in the State has hiked the fees in constituent colleges, he urged the Anna University to reconsider its decision.
