Vaiko wants Centre to drop Kudankulam plant expansion

Vaiko, in a statement, said, “In an interview, Kamalesh Nilkanth Vyas, Chairman, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), revealed that there are several glitches in Unit-I of KKNPP. When government top official of the concerned department accepted the fact that the nuclear power plants is suffering from technical problems the Union government should stop further expansion of KKNPP.”

Kamalesh, in an interview to a private news channel on Saturday, while replying to a question on repeated shutdown of KKNPP-I, accepted that the frequent shutdown is unusual and officials of DAE are working on it.

Vaiko said that through RTI it was established that KKNPP Unit I was shutdown for 47 times, since its establishment in 2013 and Unit II was shutdown for 19 times, since its establishment in 2017. Nuclear power plants across the world would be shutdown only twice or thrice for maintenance, but such high number of shutdowns show the quality of work at the KKNPP, he added.
