Election flying squad teams still on the roads
Polling for the Lok Sabha general election and by-election to Perambur assembly constituency in the city are over. But the flying squad teams and static surveillance teams that were formed to implement the election model code of conduct (MCC) are on the roads without conducting any searches.
Chennai
Officials are baffled over what they should do for the next few weeks until either the election results are out or Election Commission of India (ECI) relaxes the model code of conduct.
“The higher officials directed the teams to continue their routine. So, we must be stationed on the road until the next order comes,” a Chennai Corporation official, who is part of flying squad team, said.
However, the official added that they are expecting a relaxation order from the poll panel in a day or two as there is more than a month for the results. “Regular works had come to a grinding halt from the day when the elections were announced. We have many pending projects to complete.”
The Greater Chennai Corporation had formed more than 100 flying squad teams and static surveillance teams to prevent misconduct and cash flow during the elections. Election results are slated to be released on May 23.
“We could not even conduct review meetings. The three-month-long restriction would affect the projects severely and delay new projects. There are some precedents of ECI relaxing model code of conduct, and we are expecting the same this time too,” a senior Corporation official pointed out.
Apart from Corporation officials, officials from the Revenue Department, Police Department, Metro Water and others are also in the flying squads.
