Tirupur surprises with top spot in Class 12 results

 Tirupur district bagged first rank in terms of overall pass percentage with 95.37 in Class 12 board examinations. With 84.87 per cent, students from Karaikkal fared the worst. 

Chennai managed to get 92.96 per cent, which is slightly lower than last year’s 92.99 per cent. Interestingly, Tiruppur pass percentage was 96.18 last year, which is 0.81 per cent higher than this year. 

Students from Erode and Perambalur, too, performed well by scoring an overall pass percentage of 95.23 and 95.15 respectively. Virudhunagar, which stood number one last year by securing 97.05 per cent, managed to get only 94.44% this year.

A senior official from the Education Department said that most students in the northern belt of Virudhunagar, Erode, Tirupur gets better training at school and they usually perform well in examinations. 

Though students from Chennai performed very well, their counterparts in the neighbouring districts such as Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram did not perform well. The overall pass percentage of Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram stood at 89.49 and 89.90 respectively.

Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem, Tiruchy, Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram and Dindigul also performed well by securing above 90 per cent. 

While government schools in Tirupur stood fourth by securing overall pass percentage of 91.51, government students from Kanniyakumari came first with 92.62 per cent. It was followed by Erode (92.38 per cent) and Perambalur (91.80 per cent).

Western districts of Tamil Nadu yet again put out an impressive show in the Class 12 examinations. Tirupur district made significant strides by securing the top rank in the State, up from last year’s third rank. 

Following Tirupur, Erode has retained its second rank by securing 95.23 per cent. Of the 24,316 students, who wrote the exam, 23,155 students passed. 

With a pass percentage of 95.01, Coimbatore has improved by four slots to reach the fourth rank. However, the pass percentage has witnessed a slight dip of 0.47 per cent from last year’s 95.48 per cent. In 2017, the district had secured the 10th place. 

Of the total 35,000 students who wrote the examination in Coimbatore, 33,253 students passed with girls faring better than boys. However, none of the 16 Corporation schools secured 100 per cent pass. Officials said that efforts would be taken to improve the performance of Corporation schools.  

A senior prison officer on Friday said that 41 prisoners from different jails across the State had appeared for the Class 12 examinations and 35 of them passed. Thameemun Ansari, an inmate of Puzhal prison, has scored 470 out of 600 and came as the topper among prisoners. Thangaraj, another inmate from Coimbatore central prison, scored 464 to bag the second place while Prakash, from Vellore central prison, scored 452 marks to take the third place among the prisoners who passed Class 12 this year. 

The three websites which were given by the Directorate of School Examination to check the results were stuck for a few hours soon after the results were declared at 9.30 am on Friday. However, the government’s move to send the results through SMS was hailed by parents and teachers. The messages with the mark list started to arrive 10 minutes before the results we out on the websites. A senior official from the Education Department said that the SMS was sent to all the students who had registered their parents’ or their guardians’ mobile number. They had to register when they applied for the examination. He added that the parents and students were happy to receive the message as the websites were overloaded. “I got the results of my son through my an SMS by 9.30 am itself. It was a useful initiative,” S Kavitha, a resident of Pammal, said. She said that it will be useful if the government would take the initiative to send the exam schedule also through SMS.

Science students, once again, secured more marks than their Commerce counterparts. Of the 8.6 lakh students who wrote the exam, about 5.2 lakh were from Science group. While 2.3 lakh Commerce students scored 90.78% pass percentage, Science students secured 92.75%. A little over 13,000 students, who preferred arts subjects, had appeared for the exams. The total number of students who appeared for the vocational group was 54,935 and the pass percentage is about 82%. Likewise, the overall pass percentage of Arts students is 80.13%.
