Taxmen raid Kani’s house, return empty-handed

Sleuths attached to the Income Tax (I-T) department raided the rented house of DMK Thoothukudi candidate Kanimozhi in Kurinji Nagar on Tuesday. Official sources had earlier indicated that the searches were held following “some inputs,” but they did not elaborate. They later said it was a false tip and drew a blank.

Sources said that during the raid, Kanimozhi’s husband Aravindhan was present. Thoothukudi MLA Geetha Jeevan and his brother and DMK functionary Jagan, reached the spot after receiving information of the raid but were not allowed inside.

After the raid, Kanimozhi addressed the media outside her house, saying, “Similar to Vellore, the raid was intended to countermand the election in Thoothukudi.” She added that when I-T officials reached her house she had demanded to see the permission letter but the officials didn’t have one with them.

She also said that she was issued summons asking her to give a statement, which according to her is illegal. “As far as I know it is illegal to demand statement from the person during the raid. However, the officials after the raid accepted that they did not seize anything from my house,” said Kanimozhi.

DMK President MK Stalin strongly condemned the I-T raid. “Crores and crores of rupees are kept in the house of Tamilisai Soundararajan’s (state BJP chief) residence, why no raids there?  Stalin also said that the raids were an outcome of “fear of a damning defeat,” for BJP’s candidate Tamilisai Soundararajan in
