1951–52 The first election was held for five months from 25 October 25, 1951 to February 21, 1952. Elections to most of the state legislatures took place simultaneously.
15 members were there in the interim cabinet headed by Jawaharlal Nehru prior to the polls
489 was the total number of LS seats for which elections were held
1849 candidates (53 nominated by parties and 533 independents) contested the polls
173 million people out of an overall population of 360 million were eligible voters
45.7% was the total turnout in the maiden elections of the sub-continent
364 was the number of seats won by the Indian National Congress which formed the first elected government led by Nehru in the country
