The deceased Archana (34) was married for 17 years to Premnathan, a Grade I constable attached to Kothavalchavadi traffic police station, and the couple have two girl children.
The incident happened around 3.30 pm in the Sembium police quarters where the family had been living for the past few years. Police said that there was an ongoing dispute in the family, as Archana allegedly developed a relationship with another man in the locality. This often led to quarrel between the couple. Police sources added that Archana refused to abandon her relationship even after Premnathan’s kin took up matter to police station earlier.
On Sunday evening, a verbal duel erupted between them but Archana reportedly ignored Premnathan and locked herself in an air-conditioned room in the house. In a fit of rage, Premnathan broke open the door and hit Archana with a dumbbell which he uses for his workout. While she collapsed in a pool of blood, neighbours in the police quarters rushed her to Stanley Government Hospital in an ambulance. However, doctors declared her brought dead and sent her body to mortuary for post-mortem examination. Sembium police are investigating the incident. Premnathan has been secured by the police.
When contacted, Pulianthope Police Deputy Commissioner E Sai Charan Tejaswi said that the dispute seems to be personal and added that they would act as per the procedure. “An FIR will be registered under Section 302 of IPC and other suitable section and the police action will follow,” said the officer. Further inquiry is on.
