The woman was whisked away as her campaign was against the model code of conduct for polls, police said.

Sources said that on Thursday afternoon, a woman was campaigning against the Lok Sabha Congress candidate for Tiruchy, K Thirunavukkarasar, while cleaning the footwear of the devotees near the temple.

On information, Srirangam police rushed to the spot and picked up the woman for questioning. The woman was then identified as N Narmada (44) from Chennai. Her act was considered as a violation of the model code of conduct that came into effect immediately after the announcement of the election dates, as campaigning near religious places is prohibited.

While speaking to reporters, Narmadha alleged that being a neighbour of Thirunavukarasar in Chennai, she and her family members underwent a lot of suffering at the hands of the supporters of the Congress leader. “This was an effort to prevent such mean person from representing Tiruchy (Srirangam) constituency, which was previously represented by former CM J Jayalalithaa. Hence, I cleaned the footwear of the devotees in Srirangam and campaigned against Thirunavukarasar,” she said.

Police said that the woman might be booked for violating the modelcode of conduct.
