After serving in North Chennai as a police officer for almost 10 years in different capacities, Mourya hopes to win over the voters by highlighting the various works done by him in the past. Taking a break from his campaign, he spoke to DT Next.

Q: After serving as an IPS officer, you have taken a political plunge to contest the Lok Sabha polls. Now that you are a politician, is there a difference in your approach towards the public?

I don’t see a big difference between the two. I was serving the public then. Even now I am offering to serve them. Initially, the people came with complaints related to crime and other law and order problems. Later, I involved myself in civic issues. For instance, if the public protested for want of drinking water, I will go there and sort out the issue.

Q: What are the notable initiatives taken by you during your long tenure in North Chennai?

I served almost 10 years in North Chennai in three different tenures. I had my own proactive policing. I enrolled drop-out school children, easily poached by anti-socials, in a special security team. They were given a uniform and Rs 500 per month. I also took care of the destitutes and orphans living on the streets.

Q: Do you have any specific plans for the development of North Chennai?

Our election manifesto clearly says that we would do away the need for purchasing drinking water. Mixing of sewage with drinking water is a serious issue and it needs to be immediately addressed. Kodungaiyur dumping yard needs a modern technology to convert the garbage into manure and produce electricity from it.

Q: How do you see your winning prospects against established players like DMK and AIADMK candidates?

My party might be new, but I am well known in this constituency. While the DMK candidate is not a full-time politician, the DMDK nominee is an outsider. I feel people are so much interested in a change wherever I go to campaign.

Q: Why did you decide to join politics?

I was not interested in politics but was interested in public service. I wanted to continue it after my police days. When Kamal Haasan started his political party, he said that he was bothered about the future generation. He promised clean politics. So, I found the MNM as the best option for me.
