Modi raps DMK for 1998 blasts at Kovai rally
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing his second rally here on Tuesday after the Lok Sabha election schedule was announced, underlined his government’s commitment to work towards strengthening the nation’s economy and security. He also launched a tirade against the Congress and the DMK over their ‘anti-middle class’ sentiments.

“The DMK and the Congress plan to burden the middle class with higher taxes. Their hatred for the middle class is nothing new as your ‘recounting minister’ (P Chidambaram) once called them ‘selfish’ and had even asked why the middle class was worried about price rise,” he said, adding, the NDA would ensure that the hard-earned money of the middle class is used only for development of the nation and not for vote bank politics. The PM also invoked national security as the top-most priority and warned that those trying to attack India will be paid back with “compound interest”.
He also pointed to the Centre sanctioning the Defence Corridor covering the industrial region of Coimbatore, saying the modern defence corridor would make all self sufficient, bring more investments and generate employment.
Referring to the 1998 serial bomb blasts here, he said, “Your own city saw a deadly terror attack in February 1998,” and slammed the manner in which the then DMK government handled it.
