Police said Mohammed Sajith intercepted the container lorry bound to Palakkad in Kerala, which was loaded with tea powder bags, at Aathupalam toll gate late on Monday.

“As he claimed that money was being transported for distribution, a few bystanders joined him. Together they forced lorry driver Prakash out of the vehicle and thrashed him severely. The unruly mob also damaged the vehicle,” police said.

As more than 1,000 youths gathered at the spot, it resulted in a traffic snarl which lasted for more than an hour. On receiving information, a police team rushed to the spot and defused the situation.

Meanwhile, the flying squad sleuths brought the lorry to the district collector office and opened it in front of the public to confirm that there were just tea bags inside. Based on a complaint by truck driver S Prakash, the Kuniamuthur police registered a case against Mohammed Sajith for wrongful restrain, rioting and criminal intimidation. A manhunt is on to nab a few others involved in the case.
