Even before the arrival of summer, water shortage has already been witnessed across the state. Owing to this, 8,000 cusecs was released from Mettur on March 31 to fill Veeranam lake in Cuddalore. But, only 6,000 cusecs reached Tiruchy, from where it released to Grand Anicut. On Thursday around 6 am, the water reached Grand Anicut, from where 2,515 cusecs was released to Anaikarai check dam along Kollidam.
According to PWD officials, water released from Grand Anicut would reach Anaikarai on Saturday and Veeranam lake on Monday. Officials said that the release would be maintained for at least one week from Mettur until the lake gets filled.
The officials said that Mettur stood at 60.63 feet on Thursday morning and the inflow was 86 cusecs while outflow was 6,000 cusecs. The latest availability at Mettur was 25.15 TMC on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Cauvery River Retrieval Committee Coordinator P Maniarasan condemned the water release and demanded the State government to get the due share of water from Karnataka. He said that due to the release, water availability would be reduced. Thus, Kuruvai cultivation would suffer and the farmers would face loss, he said.
