DMDK petitions ECI to ban ‘Basket’ symbol
The DMDK on Wednesday petitioned the Election Commission of India (ECI) reiterating its demand to ban the ‘Basket’ symbol, which it said resembled the party’s ‘Nagara’ symbol.

Addressing newspersons after submitting the petition, DMDK North Chennai District Secretary Madhivanan said, “We had earlier sought a ban on the ‘Basket’ symbol. We have again stressed the same to the ECI.”
Urging the ECI to monitor social media, he said his party was also against the cancellation of Parliamentary election in Vellore constituency following the recent money seizure made by the Income Tax Department.
“Our party leader Vijayakant wants the ECI to disqualify the candidate who is linked to the incident. However, he does not want the election to be cancelled as candidates of other parties have spent money for their poll campaign,” said Madhivanan.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) state president G P Sarathy also submitted a petition to the ECI, demanding the imposition of President’s Rule on the date of polling.
“On the day of election, all the voters should be treated the same. There should be no special preference for anyone including the Prime Minister. If President’s Rule is implemented, there would be no Prime Minister and the election would be held in a free and fair manner.”
