Betrothed girl argues over gold, kills self

The police said that Valli (23), daughter of Ethiraj (50) of Elathur village near Nemili on Vellore-Kancheepuram border, was apparently distraught as her parents cited financial difficulties and said they would be able to provide the promised jewels only after some time.

Valli was betrothed to be married to a local youth. Following difference of opinion with her parents on this issue, she was distressed. Three days ago, she attempted suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan.

On seeing this, her mother and relatives rushed her to the Kancheepuram government hospital from where she was referred to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai, where she succumbed in the early hours of Tuesday. The Banavaram police registered a case and are investigating.
