Senior AIADMK leader and Karur candidate M Thambidurai on Saturday charged DMK leader V Senthil Balaji for conspiring to put off the elections after two of the ruling party cadre were assaulted late on Friday evening.
While campaigning in Aravakurichi area on Friday evening along with Senthil Balaji, Congress candidate S Jothimani had stepped off her vehicle at Linganayakkanpatti to interact with the public.
Suddenly, two men in the crowd raised their voices against her and asked her not to campaign in the area. When Senthil Balaji rushed to Jothimani’s rescue, they reportedly threatened them with a knife.
Subsequently, the DMK cadre who witnessed this episode, rushed to catch the duo and assaulted them. The two men were identified as Thirumurthy (32) from Easanatham and Periasamy (26) from Palapatti, both AIADMK cadre. Later, they were handed over to the police.
Senthil Balaji lodged a complaint with the police stating that the duo had attempted to stab him with a knife. Meanwhile, the two AIADMK cadre, who assaulted by the DMK workers, were admitted at the Karur government hospital on Saturday.
On information, AIADMK candidate M Thambidurai visited both Thirumurthy and Periasamy in the hospital and consoled them. Subsequently, he told reporters that Senthil Balaji has been trying to stop the election at Karur constituency by means of violence.
“He (Senthil Balaji) triggered violence and stopped the Aravakurchi Assembly poll. That’s why the Aravakurichi people are left without an MLA. In the same way, he is planning to spread violence in the Karur Lok Sabha constituency and stop the election, so that the people are also left without an MP,” Thambidurai said, adding that the people will not support the Congress and the DMK anymore.
Locals confront leaders over past promises
In what could be termed as a ‘reap what you sow’ incident, two ruling party leaders in the last two days were stopped from campaigning and questioned about the promises they had made while seeking votes in earlier elections.
Late on Friday evening, Minister S Valarmathi had gone to Sevvanthipatti in Srirangam Assembly segment to campaign for DMDK candidate Dr V Ilangovan. Seeing the minister visiting their village for the first time after being elected from the constituency, the local women surrounded her and questioned her about the drinking water issue, which she had promised to solve during the election.
They told the minister that they are experiencing water shortage even though the summer is yet to be at its peak. Failing to come up with a prompt reply, Valarmathi continued with her task of garnering votes for the DMDK candidate, who is contesting in AIADMK front.
Still, the women went with their questions, expecting a proper reply from the minister. They claimed that they had brought the issue to her several times but no action was taken to solve the drinking water problems.
Since the people went on asking her about her promise to solve the problem and prevented the minister to go further into the village, she left the place along with the DMDK candidate.
Similarly, when AIADMK candidate M Thambidurai was campaigning in Karur constituency on Saturday, the locals inquired him about the promises he had made earlier.
A section of people also told him that they won’t vote for him unless he fulfils their promises, which including the solving of drinking water issues, setting up of a medical college and other facilities. On hearing this, Thambidurai reportedly shouted at them and said he does not want their votes.
