Kamal visits Kovai girl’s kin, says situation in TN not safe for women and children
Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) president Kamal Haasan on Friday slammed the AIADMK government of being complacent on crimes against women and children.
Coimbatore
The actor-turned-politician, who arrived here after cancelling his scheduled election campaigns in Chennai, personally met and consoled the family of a seven-year-old girl, who was brutally raped and murdered in the outskirts of Coimbatore.
“The police can easily crack the case, which happened in a small neighbourhood. But their investigation is tardy because the government remains complacent. Justice is yet to be delivered to the family of the victim. It is the duty of the government to expedite the investigation,” he told reporters.
Stating that Tamil Nadu reported the maximum number of crimes against children and women, Kamal termed these incidents to be a shame for the state.
“In this scenario, the girl children are unsafe to play even 20 feet away from their houses. Parents are worried about the safety of their daughters after the Pollachi sex scandal and this incident. The government should take all necessary measures to ensure a safe environment for girls and women,” he said.
Lamenting that the West Zone IG had refused to meet him in connection with the case citing election work, Kamal also faulted the Election Commission of preventing MNM from carrying out poll work. Kamal was accompanied by the party’s vice president R Mahendran.
Later, Kamal met Coimbatore Superintendent of Police R Pandiarajan urging him to take swift action and punish the culprits.
Meanwhile, the police seem to have made no headway in the sensational case of rape and murder of the seven-year-old girl. Posters in the name of New Democratic Labour Front surfaced in Thudiyalur condemning the SP over the issue.
The seven-year-old girl, who went missing on Monday, was found dead near her residence on Tuesday morning. Police have secured a few suspects, but couldn’t establish their involvement in the heinous crime beyond doubt.
The rape and murder of the minor girl triggered widespread outrage as it occurred close on the heels of Pollachi sexual assault incident.
