Won’t campaign for Eelam Tamils ‘enemy’ Cong: Velmurugan
Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi founder Velmurugan, who was formerly associated with the PMK, spokes to DT Next about his support to the DMK in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and why he was not in favour of campaigning for the Congress though the party is a part of the DMK alliance in the state.
Before the alliance with DMK was confirmed, there were rumours that you might go with the AMMK. Was it true?
There’s no truth in this. In one of my press meets, I said that leaders of several parties are in talks with me including one of the leaders who always smiles before the media. The identity of the person was misunderstood as AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran. But I was not involved in any talks with him.
What made you support DMK in this election?
In this election, the fascist regime of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centre should be ousted and for this sole reason, our party has extended support to the DMK.
When will you start campaigning for the DMK?
Right now, I am hospitalised. Once I am discharged I will commence my campaign.
Will you also campaign for Congress as you had differences with the party in the past?
It is true that we had differences with Congress over the Tamil Eelam issue and the release of the seven Rajiv convicts. For the same reason, we have decided to not campaign for Congress. However, if Congress demands our support we will decide after convening a party meeting.
Will your campaign be targeted against PMK?
My campaign will be for all the DMK candidates and there will be no differences between them. If there is a need to campaign against the PMK I will definitely do it.
Will the relationship with DMK be extended after Lok Sabha elections?
(Smiles) The alliance is for the upcoming elections and if BJP is ousted, I am not sure that the relationship will continue.
