Nominations galore filed on last day
The final day of filing nominations saw candidates resort to publicity stunts galore.
Coimbatore
Independent candidate Noor Muhammed from Sundarapuram rode a horse to file his nomination at the Coimbatore district collector office on Tuesday. He was dressed in a white shirt and veshti but wore a cowboy cap.
Muhammed sought to highlight that people continue to suffer without any growth, while politicians elected by them have become ‘kings’.
“I was elected a councillor for Coimbatore corporation when I contested as an Independent in 1997. Since then I have filed nominations to contest in various elections. And this is my 30th elections,” he told reporters.
In Tirupur district, MNM candidate VS Chandra Kumar, 45, wore a t-shirt with the image of torch light, the party’s symbol to file his nomination. However, the election officials informed him that candidates should not file their nominations by displaying their party symbols. Chandra Kumar then wore a shirt to file his nomination.
The Salem Lok Sabha constituency has received the most nominations — 37. Of this, 18 candidates filed their papers on Tuesday. Next comes the Namakkal district with about 20 persons filing nominations on last day to take the total candidates to 36. In Coimbatore, 34 candidates have filed their nominations.
In Erode district, 29 nominations were received and 26 in Tirupur district.
