    HIV case: HC seeks committee report, counter

    In a case where a woman charged the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital (KMCH) of infusing her with HIV contaminated blood, the Madras High Court has directed the State to file a counter and submit copies of the committee report that denied the allegation.

    When the plea moved by a woman from Mangadu came up seeking to take necessary action against the dean and officials, and provide damages came up for hearing on Friday, Justice K Ravichandrabaabu granted four weeks to file the counter.


    The judge also recorded Additional Advocate General (AAG) A Kumar’s submission that a committee formed after the complaint concluded that there was no evidence to suggest that she contracted HIV after blood transfusion performed at KMCH.


    The woman had alleged that she became infected with HIV virus after she underwent a blood transfusion at the hospital. She said she was undergoing treatment at a primary health centre in Mangadu and underwent a blood test when she was four months pregnant. When the blood test reports said that she was anaemic, she was given two units of blood at the hospital. She was admitted on May 5 and discharged on May 15. Later, she visited KMCH for a regular check-up on August 16. A blood test done as part of the check-up confirmed the presence of the HIV virus.


    Following ART treatment, the male child the woman delivered on September 15 was tested negative for HIV.
