Social media posts push for rethink on choices
While election manifestos are generally perceived by ambitious political parties to be a crucial means of cashing in on the vote bank during an imminent election, technology seems to have proved otherwise now, thanks to the allure of social media.
Vellore
Ever since major political parties in the State released their manifestos a few days ago, social media is awash with memes that highlight the lighter side of the parties’ otherwise serious demands. The posts have forced smartphone users to now think twice before making their choice for the upcoming polls. Party leaders’ earlier statements on various issues are also compared with their present stance and posted as memes online.
Social media platforms, especially WhatsApp, over the past two days, is abuzz with memes ridiculing especially the alliance partners of the coalition formed by the Dravidian majors for the upcoming Lok Sabha poll. It appears that not much effort is put in to make the public laugh, as party leaders’ statements and footage themselves provide fodder. No party is taboo for meme brigade.
Take for instance DMDK treasurer Premalatha Vijayakant’s speech at an earlier meeting where she categorically stated that all AIADMK ministers would go to jail “one after the other” on corruption charges, only to join the AIADMK-led alliance this time. A meme out of this is now going viral on social media.
Similarly, another meme out of PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss’s earlier statement that his party would not have any truck with the Dravidian majors in the State and that he was willing to even sign a document to this effect if necessary, is being compared with the alliance it has presently formed with one of the outfits AIADMK. This meme is found to be a ‘forward favourite’ on social media now.
Likewise, the DMK is also not spared, with minutes-long video showing a bespectacled youth putting forth questions to a visibly-shaken party president Stalin shared widely on social media.
People who received such forwards now seem to be reconsidering their choice in the upcoming polls. A Satish, an auto driver here and a die-hard DMK fan, said “I am seriously thinking of opting for the None Of The Above (NOTA) as both sides (the AIADMK and the DMK led alliance) think the public will believe whatever they say.”
