Tiruparankundram DMK candidate offers to withdraw petition in HC
Close on the heels of the Election Commission (EC) citing litigations for not holding by-elections to three Assembly constituencies– Tiruparankundram, Aravakurichi and Ottapidaram – along with the Lok Sabha elections, the then DMK candidate P Saravanan, who had challenged the Tiruparankundram election, filed a memo on Monday seeking to withdraw his plea.
Chennai
Justice P Velmurugan, who had reserved his orders on the plea in October last, is likely to decide on the memo on Tuesday.
Saravanan in his election petition had submitted that AK Bose of the AIADMK, who had won the election, had obtained the thumb impression of then general secretary of AIADMK J Jayalalithaa in the nomination papers by fraud when she was unconscious in hospital.
He claimed that he would have won easily if the poll panel had rejected Bose’s nomination and not allotted the Two Leaves symbol to him.
Incidentally, during the pendency of the plea, Bose died on August 2, 2018. Thereafter, Saravanan moved a new application seeking to declare him as winner.
On Monday, when Justice Velmurugan commenced his proceeding, Saravanan’s counsel on citing EC’s decision sought the court to pronounce the order quickly. However, while the judge said that he would consider the request, Saravanan changed his mind and filed the withdrawal plea in the afternoon.
