Officials said that it all started when A Suchithra (16) of Kuppanatham village in Chengam taluk petitioned the Collector at the grievances day meet on March 4 pleading for protection for herself and her younger brother and sister as her uncle Settu, his wife Chitra and their son Manikandan were harassing them. She stated in the petition that their father died in 2009 and her mother in January 2019.
On instructions from the Collector, the Chengam all women police investigated and obtained a writter assurance from Settu and his family that they would not harass Suchitra, her sister Sumitra (15) and brother Venkatakrishnan (11).
However, as Settu and his family failed to keep their promise, Suchitra sought the help of Collector again, who ordered an inquiry by the district social welfare officer and the the police version was confirmed.
It was also found that the trio wanted to take over 2.17 acres wetland in Suchitra’s paternal grandmother’s name and a tiled house in her paternal grandfather’s name. Following this revelation, Kandasamy appointed himself as guardian for the three children till they become major.
