The parents claimed that the CMCH authorities have been threatening them against speaking to media. “We are not satisfied with the treatment being given to our child. The hospital is also not providing us with proper medical documents on the donor, who gave blood,” they alleged.

They claimed that their daughter, born underweight, was tested HIV positive after she was given blood while undergoing treatment for her heart defect in CMCH in August last year.

Meanwhile, an inquiry is already under way at the CMCH. The hospital authorities, however, refused the allegations and claimed that the baby was only transfused with packed red blood cells (RBC), which has no possibility of HIV infection.

Meanwhile, the State Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and sought a detail report from the Director of Medical Education, Kilpauk and the Project Director of Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society (TANSACS) within four weeks.

According to the girl’s father, her transfusion was stopped midway in the CMCH and that the doctors said the blood had been collected from an old man and incorrectly given to the child.
