Police said that the 14-year-old girl, who was studying at a government school in Tiruttani, lived with her parents at Pothaturpettai, New Venkatapuram. Her father works as a casual labourer nearby.

On July 9, 2018, the girl had gone to school as usual but did not return home in the evening.

Her parents, after searching for their daughter in the neighbours’ homes and surrounding areas, lodged a complaint at the Pothadurpettai police station and a case was registered.

However, the police gave up the investigation as they could not trace her.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, a sugar cane farmer Suresh (46), while he was passing by the area, found some bone pieces and a school uniform in a farmland in Keechalam village and immediately informed the police.

A police team rushed to the spot and recovered the uniform besides some hair that was chopped.

Using the bones and the hair, they tried to match it with any of the missing persons. Since the age of the victim matched with that of the missing girl, RK Pettai inspector Ramesh and his team checked with Subramani and his wife, who confirmed that the remains belonged to their daughter.

Police are now trying to find out if the minor girl was sexually assaulted before she was murdered and buried at the isolated spot.

“We are probing all possible angles and inquiring suspects,” police said.

Investigators also added that they might also go for an inquiry by Revenue Divisional Office (RDO) in the case.
