Indians want Sabya to redesign sari emoji
The Unicode Consortium, the body which approves and standardises emojis, has put out 59 new emojis, which has caused quite a flutter on social media.
Chennai
And if one were to factor in all the variations, a whopping 230 new emojis have been approved. While several emojis have been added for gender and racial inclusivity, Indians are most excited about the sari, temple and the popular auto rickshaw emoji!
The sari got the most criticism, with many saying it looked more like a salwar kameez. Several asked if the emoji designer had even seen a real sari, while others demanded Indian designers be roped in for the job. Twitter user ZacAttack wrote:“Maybe they should have got Sabya (designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee) to design it!” Social media had a field day with the auto emoji as well, and one popular tweet from TN user Kris Rajagopal said: “When I tried to send this emoji, it asked for extra fare!” Emojis for a temple and a diya have also been approved. The new emojis are expected to be rolled out by September or October 2019, but some vendors may roll them out before that as well.
