According to police, the victim M Prithvi Singh (26), an employee of a private parcel firm was on his way to Coimbatore International Airport carrying three kilogram of gold worth about Rs 2.5 crore. The incident happened nearly 100 feet away from Peelamedu police station on Avinashi Road.

The jewels, manufactured by 15 jewellery firms in Coimbatore were to be dispatched to customers in Mumbai by flight. Prithvi had to deliver the gold parcel, in a flight that takes off at 7.30 am from the airport. So he left from near Mill Road on a two-wheeler at 5:30. “While nearing Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International School of Textiles and Management, an un-registered two-wheeler hit from behind resulting in Prithivi falling from his vehicle. When he got up to get hold of the gold parcel, the three men wearing helmets, threw chilli powder and attacked him with an iron rod,” police said.

Police added that as Prithvi collapsed the robbers fled from the spot on their two-wheeler, with the gold parcel. Based on the information, the Peelamedu police rushed to the spot and seized a knife and a pair of slippers, believed to be that of robbers. Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Sumit Sharan visited the scene of the crime and held inquiries.

Suspecting the role of parcel office staff in the robbery, police have begun checking CCTV cameras on all signals on Avinashi Road starting from Mill Road to know if someone suspicious was following Prithvi Singh.

“The culprits had known well that Prithvi Singh was in possession of gold and meticulously executed their plan. So we are interrogating staff of the parcel firm aware of the transportation of gold,” police added.
