Crack found in Tiruvannamalai temple gopuram sculpture
The joint commissioner of Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments (HR & CE) Department, R Gnanasekaran, on Thursday wrote to his superiors in Chennai seeking speedy measures to fix a crack, which had developed and now widened, on Kodi Mangai sculpture atop the Ammani Amman gopuram of Arunachaleswarar temple on Thursday.
Tiruvannamalai
The crack was spotted by some devotees and brought to the notice of R Gnanasekaran, who is also the in-charge of the temple.
Following the communication from Gnanasekaran’s, the Chennai headquarters is expected to depute experts in sculpture and sculptors shortly to the temple to study if the crack on the sculpture would affect gopuram of the temple or could it be fixed without any trouble to the tower.
Out of the nine gopurams in the temple, the 171-foot-high Ammani Amman or north gopuram has several individual and multiple sculptures.
The damaged piece is 32 feet tall and situated at the lower portion of the gopuram, which is situated near the entrance. According to the devotees, the crack is visible from the ground.
The other sculptures present in the gopuram, include Lord Muruga and Vinayaga.
The Kodi Mangai figurine developed a minor crack as early as 2002 but no action was taken.
However, now the crack has widened into a vertical line above the chest of the statue.
When asked about this, temple sources said that the crack was similar to the one found in the Rajagopuram during the kumbhabishekam in 2017 and added that the advice of technical experts would be sought to fix the crack.
