The State government on Tuesday clarified that the money deposited under the contributory pension scheme (CPS) was safe and is being maintained under a public account.

In a statement, K Shanmugam, Finance Secretary, said: “Till March 31 last year, the total fund deposited in public account under CPS was Rs 21,820.90 crore. The account is regularly audited by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG).”
The clarification comes in the wake of rumours among JACTTO-GEO members that the government had misused the CPS fund. The protesting government employees had even alleged that the government had spent the money for its welfare schemes.
Refuting the claims, the State government has said 10 per cent of the salary of government employees is deducted for pension and an equal amount is contributed by the government. Along with the pension amount, the interest for the maintained fund stands at more than Rs 5,000 crore.
“The data is preserved in the data centre maintained by the State government,” said Shanmugam, adding that employees can check the status of their fund by visiting http://cps.tn.gov.in/public
