One of the major problems faced by police personnel, especially the women in khaki, while on bandobust duties, is finding proper restrooms to relieve themselves. They usually request nearby hotels and residents if required, but all that is going to change. The city police can now bid lavatory woes goodbye as they are all set to get 27 mobile toilet vans exclusively for the police department.
Tenders have been floated for the purpose and the toilet vans will be ready within three to six months, said V Shyamala Devi, Additional Inspector General, Headquarters, DGP office.
Among the 27 toilet vans, 14 will be for men and 13 for women. Each unit will have five European-style water closets, while there will be two additional urinal basins for men. Each van will also have two wash basins, two dustbins, two mirrors, two napkin hangers and soap keepers. A sludge tank with a capacity of 1,000 litres will be attached to each van, which will have an overhead tank with the same capacity. The vans will come with a generator attached for power supply and a one horse-power motor to refill the tank.
The Additional IG said that similar vans have already been provided to districts and most of the 27 vans will be provided to Greater Chennai Police. “The city police already have four vans, one for each zone. The 27 vans will be equally distributed among various ranges in the city and will be maintained by them,” the official added. The vans will be taken to venues of protest and public meetings where a lot of police personnel are posted to monitor and control the crowd. However, only cops would be allowed to use the toilet units.
