    Remuneration hiked for temporary teachers replacing striking staff

    The Tamil Nadu government on Friday announced hike in remuneration for temporary teachers, who would replace striking teaching staff, from Rs 7,500 to Rs 10,000. The decision was taken by the School Education Department.

    Stating that elementary and primary schools have only two teachers and participation of both have led to the closure of schools, the parents teachers association had been asked to engage temporary staff to restore functioning of the school.


    Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan, in a letter to the School Education Department, said the government gave the clearance for engaging teachers through the associations of nearby high and higher secondary schools. In another circular, School Education Secretary Pradeep Yadav said as there was no fixed estimate of expenditure, a policy decision was taken and the entire cost of engaging new teachers would be borne by the government.


    The official added that at least one teacher would start duty by Monday so that schools function smoothly.


    Meanwhile, the Director of School Education issued a warning notice to the striking teachers saying disciplinary action would be taken under 17(b) of the Tamil Nadu Government Servants Conduct Rules if they boycott the Republic Day function.
