Justices K K Sasitharan and P D Audikesavalu directed the Madurai Collector to extend a sum of Rs 1.75 lakh to Raghavan and Rs 1.25 lakh to each of the three advocates on the panel, in recognition of their service.

In their report submitted to the court on Tuesday, the advocates claimed that no money was collected as donation. However, prizes offered by donors were provided to bulls and tamers who excelled in the event. “Moreover, no major injuries were reported. Both the government officials and the local people extended their cooperation for the successful event,” they said.

The judges also appreciated the Commissioner of Madurai Corporation as well as the district administration for the smooth conduct of the event.

The jallikattu at Avaniyapuram was scheduled on January 15 but owing to discontent among a section of locals with the local organising committee, there was some uncertainty over conducting the event.

After several petitioners moved the court against the local organising committee, the bench constituted a committee led by the retired Justice to organise the event. Three advocates B Saravanan, N Dilip Kumar and Anand Chandrasekar were also appointed to the panel. The court had also formed an advisory committee comprising 16 local people to assist the organising committee.
