In addition, to attract the tipplers, the state-owned TASMAC, the monopoly agency to sell liquor in Tamil Nadu, has also procured several thousand cases of tin beer from other states, which will be on the display in most of the liquor outlets.

A senior TASMAC official told DT Next on Saturday that on an average, liquor sales across the state is anywhere between Rs 70 crore and Rs 75 crore per day.

According to the official, on the normal weekend, the sales will be about Rs 80 crore per day. “This year the Pongal festival comes just after the weekend and therefore the sales are expected to cross more than Rs 400 crore,” he added.

Stating that TASMAC has purchased nearly 20,000 extra cases of beer cans from various distilleries, the official said at the same time 20,000 extra cases of hard liquor comprising Brandy, Whiskey and Rum have been procured for this festival anticipating more sales.

At present, all the liquor, which was purchased especially for the Pongal festival, was stocked in depots situated in the districts.

He said all the extra liquor cases, which were purchased later, will be sent to the retail vending shops from Saturday noon depending on the requirement.“Tin beer will be transported to liquor shops in the cities where the demand is more,” he added.

The official said according to the plan, liquor sales on Saturday is expected to touch Rs 90 crore and Sunday sales is likely to be about Rs 100 crore. “On Monday and Tuesday, the sales will cross Rs 120 crore respectively,” the official claimed.

He said oral order has been issued to the salesmen at the liquor shops that incentives will be given if the sales targets are achieved.

There are about 3,800 vending shops available for tipplers in the state. Liquor varieties are supplied by 19 distilleries that manufacture alcohol in Tamil Nadu. Among them, 17 are in the private sector and two are in the co-operative sector.
