US journalist case: Environmental activist questioned
Environmental activist Nityanand Jayaraman was questioned by the Thoothukudi police on Monday in connection with the detention of US-based freelance journalist Mark Scialla.

The American was reportedly working on a story regarding the anti-Sterlite protests, before he was deported to his native country on January 1. Jayaraman was questioned on whether he knew Scialla or had an involvement in the protests.
Addressing reporters after the police inquiry, Jayaraman said he has been against the copper plant since 2007, highlighting its violations. “I have been supporting the protesters’ cause based on scientific and legal reasons.”
“The State Government should take criminal action against the Sterlite management,” he said, adding that the chances of reopening the copper plant were remote.
“The company’s wrongdoings can be exposed in the public only when cases concerning such violations are tried and heard in the Thoothukudi Magisterial court,” Jayaraman said.
