Jallikattu, a private event, won’t interfere: HC
The Madras High Court while refusing to pass any orders on jallikattu reportedly becoming caste-oriented has directed the State to inform the court as to who would pay compensation for those who either sustain injuries or get killed during the event.
Chennai
A division bench comprising Justice M Sathyanarayanan and Justice P Rajamanickam before whom the plea moved by Tamil Nadu Devandra Kula Velalar Urimai Meetpu Iyakkam came up on Monday, made it known that jallikattu is a private event and hence, it will not interfere with the same.
However, the bench on wondering as to who would pay up for those who either sustain injuries or get killed sought the State to provide details about the same and posted the case for further hearing to January 23.
Additional Government Pleader E Manoharan informed the court that though the old rules had put the onus on the organisers, the new rules failed to account for this aspect and hence would get instructions on the same.
The Iyakkam, represented by its president C Selvakumar, had contended that those who were a part of Devendra Kula Vellalar and other scheduled caste people were not allowed to be a member of the committee constituted for conducting jallikattu in Avaniapuram, Alanganallur and other places despite the State ministers participating in it. The plea sought for a direction to constitute the committee of delegates comprising members from all communities.
