Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar on Sunday said that residents of Tiruvarur themselves are not in favour of a bypoll at this juncture.
Chennai
“Tiruvarur was one of the worst affected districts by Cyclone Gaja and under the circumstance, people who were mentally affected by the cyclone are not in a position to accept a bypoll in their constituency,” said Jayakumar in Chennai.
Jayakumar went to Kannikapuram in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar after 10 huts were damaged in a fire accident. He consoled the victims and assured them that Rs 5,000 would be given to them apart from dhotis and sarees.
He then addressed the reporters and said that Tiruvarur people have not recovered completely from the cyclone damage and all the major parties are of the opinion that the bypoll should be deferred.
When asked about the comments of Amma Makkal Munntra Kazhagam leader TTV Dhinakaran attacking the AIADMK, Jayakumar replied that they did not consider Dhinakaran as a political leader and see him only as an independent candidate.
