Claiming that the Tiruvarur bypoll is a chance to prove the party’s strength, the AMMK deputy general secretary TTV Dhinakaran assured on Friday that his party candidate would win with a remarkable margin on a par with the RK Nagar bypoll.
Dhinakaran, who announced the Tiruvarur AMMK district secretary S Kamaraj as the party candidate said, the Election Commission has given the bypoll as the Pongal gift and the cadre should ensure victory of the party candidate.
“After the demise of ‘Amma,’ we faced the first bypoll and we had no party name neither the party symbol but the cadre had put in their works for more than 20 days and ensured victory. And the Tiruvarur bypoll is another chance to prove our strength,” he said.
Stating that the Tiruvarur segment has been divided into three zones and each zone has an in-charge person, Dhinakaran said, all the office bearers from 70 districts are advised to discuss with the persons in-charge and execute their works. He asked the party workers to get the party candidates winning with more margin than that of RK Nagar.”
Tiruvarur should turn to the fortress of ‘Amma’, he told the cadre. “Once Tiruvarur was considered as DMK fortress but now, it has turned as AMMK fortress and the people’s response to the party is enormous,” he said. The candidate S Kamaraj (52) was a native of Eda Annavasal, he joined the AIADMK in 1981.
Form 1998-2001 he worked as the Needamangalam Union secretary of AIADMK and in 2001-03 he was Tiruvarur District secretary of the party. He was also the Panchayat Union President of the Needamangalam from October 2011 to January 2012.
He unsuccessfully contested as AIADMK candidate from Mannargudi assembly constituency in the year 2016.
After the demise of J Jayalalithaa, Kamaraj joined hands with Dhinakaran and was appointed the organising secretary of the AMMK and then the district secretary of the outfit.
DMK chooses Kalaivanan, ends speculations
The DMK on Friday announced that senior party functionary Poondi Kalaivanan as its candidate for the bypoll to Tiruvarur Assembly constituency, which will be held on January 28. It was formally announced by DMK president and Opposition Leader of the House MK Stalin.
A decision was taken in this regard at a party meeting, which was held to scrutinise the applications of the candidates, who had evinced interest to contest the polls.
Hailing from a farmer’s family, currently, Kalaivanan is Tiruvarur district secretary of the party.
A few days ago there was speculation that Stalin might contest the by-election following the request of senior party leaders.
With Stalin refusing to contest the elections, Kalaivanan was the obvious choice of the party leaders.
In addition, representatives of the fan club of actor Udhayanidhi, son of Stalin, filed applications seeking to contest the bypoll on his behalf. Kalaivanan said that he had filed his application as per the advice of Stalin.
The by-election was necessitated following the death of former sitting MLA and the late chief minister M Karunanidhi last August.
AIADMK sees 52 applications to contest bypoll as a boost
The ruling AIADMK, which is facing factional feud and was depending on its charismatic leader J Jayalalithaa’s legacy has something to cheer about. The party has attracted 52 applications from the aspirants in the past two days and the AIADMK top brass are exploring the applications of three key aspirants for the Tiruvarur bypoll.
“It is a fact that the DMK and AMMK went for their best bets depending on the local district secretaries, but the AIADMK local heavy weight and district secretary R Kamaraj is already the Food Minister and this one of the reason for the party to delay the announcement of the candidate when compared to DMK and AMMK,” said a former AIADMK legislator.
The silver lining is that the several aspirants have queued up seeking to fight the high profile Tiruvarur seat and the announcement will be made on Saturday.
The Minister from the district Kamaraj will have a say on the selection of candidate. AIADMK’s R Panneerselvam, who lost the seat to former chief minister M Karunanidhi is a contender and the party also has three other options including two former MLAs, the source said.
“The party is fully geared up for the bypoll. Campaign trail of Ministers, star campaigners schedule, organising booth level committees are over, and the state Ministers will begin their round of campaign from January 9,” Tamil Development Minister K Pandiarajan told DT Next. Due to the Assembly the seniors are held up in Chennai till Tuesday.
Unlike the DMK where applications are filed by the party workers for Stalin and his son, for a constituency represented by their patriarch, the AIADMK has managed to get 52 individual applications. This gives fresh confidence to the ruling party and Tiruvarur will be a good fight between the Dravidian parties, the Minister said.
