Rajasekhar, a resident of 7th ward in Avadi said that most roads in his locality was not up to the mark. “The road which connects Ward 7 to Redhills is in such a bad situation that so many motorists were finding it difficult to even commute. Since the local authorities never take any action, we had to stage a protest to highlight the issue,” he said. Similarly, residents of ward 8 claimed that the Patchai Amman Koil Main road in their ward was also unmotorable and remained so for long now. “Many complaints have been made by locals, but no action has been taken so far,” said Elumalai, a resident of Avadi.
The municipality which consists of 48 wards is home to several government officials, IT professionals etc. yet remain largely under developed. At least, 20,000 residents suffer due to the local body apathy.
Speaking to the DT Next, Assistant Engineer Sankar in charge of ward 7 and 8 said, “The protest took place last month and the municipality has decided to lay new roads across the 7th and 8th ward. We had deferred the work waiting for the rainy season to end. Now, we will start the works.”
He added that storm water drain construction was one of the main reasons for roads to be in bad condition. “There was some delay in the storm water drain construction and it is also being addressed. Soon, all residents’ issues will be solved,” Sankar said.
