    Tension prevailed at Thanjavur Collectorate on Monday after a man listed out charges against the officials who had reportedly demanded money for disbursing the compensation for his father’s death in the Gaja devastation.

    Chinnaiyyan (72), father of C Thirupathi (41), died when a coconut tree fell on him during Cyclone Gaja’s landfall in Thanjavur. It is learnt that the government sanctioned a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to kin of Chinnaiyyan.


    When his son Thirupathi went to receive the compensation, it is alleged that the officials demanded bribe from him.


    A vexed Thirupathi, who carried all the documents relating to the compensation, entered the grievances hall where the Collector was receiving petitions. He started screaming that the officials had been demanding bribe to disburse the compensation. He also appealed to the Collector to order the officials to provide the compensation or else, he would self-immolate himself. Subsequently, Collector Annadurai ordered an inquiry into the issue.
