Sattur case: HIV+ donor dies in Madurai hospital
The 19-year-old youth, who had consumed rat poison on learning that a pregnant woman who had received his HIV positive blood had contracted the virus, died here on Sunday, Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital authorities said.
Madurai
He had been undergoing treatment at Government Rajaji Hospital here for three days and died of Gastro Intestinal (GI) bleeding, they said.
He was stable. But the poison he consumed has a propensity to cause bleeding anytime. There was GI (stomach) bleeding early on Sunday and he vomited blood, S Shanmugasundaram, dean of Madurai Medical College and Government Rajaji Hospital told reporters. After he vomited, though the patient was treated as per protocol, which includes transfusion of one unit of blood and three units of fresh frozen plasma, he succumbed to the poison, the dean added. Sources said rat killer in powder form was dangerous than in its paste form.
The aggrieved mother of the donor said on Sunday that her family could not come to terms with the fact that he was no more. His condition had been improving and he had even spoken to a few of his family members on Saturday night, she added.
Angered by the donor’s death, his relatives thronged the Madurai GRH and refused to believe that his was a natural death. They also demanded that post-mortem be conducted by doctors of other hospitals and the process be video graphed. They submitted a petition before the Dean (in-charge).
