    Bar Council fines budding advocates for violating code

    The enrolment committee of the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry has come down heavily on all the law graduates who enrolled on December 21 for failing to adhere to the declaration signed by them of maintaining the dignity due to the profession on the day of the enrolment itself by resorting to grand function on the road and bursting crackers at the cost of public interest.

    Directing all the 534 lawyers to pay Rs 1,000 towards CM relief fund for raising slogans and another 11 lawyers to pay Rs 10,000 for pasting posters and installing banners, senior advocate R Singaravelan and N Chandrasekaran both members of the enrolment committee, said, “It is very painful to note that even before the commencement of their profession they have behaved in such a manner creating ugly atmosphere to the society.”


    Listing out the 11 names, including that of a woman advocate for the poster menace, the members said, “They have affixed big posters in and around the High Court and throughout the state, as if they have served this country, creating a sense of fear and confusion in the minds of the common people as if they are either elected or nominated to the bar council.”


    Also, on holding that they are not empowered to show mercy to anyone who has violated the code of conduct prescribed in law and in Form II declaration, the members said, “If mercy is shown there will be no end for this type of violation. We direct the secretary to permit the candidates who have chosen to appear before the committee and tender apology for enrolment on payment of Rs 10,000 to the Welfare of BCTNP by way of cheque or DD or cash with an affidavit of apology before the time of enrolment failing which their enrolment can be kept in abeyance.”


    “The enrolment that took place on December 21 will be subjected to scrutinisation of video CD and only after that the enrolment certificates will be issued,” the members said.
