Jallikattu is almost synonymous with Madurai as the city hosts some of the best Jallikattu events in the entire state. Alanganallur, Palamedu and Avaniyapuram are world famous sites, which witness participation of more than a hundred bulls.

The state government passed a Government Order (GO) today which stated that jallikattu will be held at Avaniyapuram, Palamedu and Alanganallur on January 15, 16 and 17 respectively.

Jallikattu remained banned following a Supreme Court order in May 2014.

In January 2017, more than 30,000 pro-jallikattu protesters gathered along the Marina beach for more than a week, demanding lifting of the ban on the controversial bull-taming sport. Subsequent protests erupted in districts across Tamil Nadu. The protests ended in violent clashes as police attempted to remove the protesters.

Following the incident, the state government brought an ordinance to facilitate its conduct.
