Super speciality facilities to be introduced in 3 Government Hospitals
In a major boost to the healthcare, the State government had issued orders to upgrade three Government Hospitals (GHs) by introducing super speciality departments, like those in the AIIMS.

The State government recently issued three orders for upgrading super speciality facilities in Thanjavur, Madurai and Tirunelveli GHs, at a total cost of Rs 450 crore. The augmentation of these GHs would becarried out under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). Out of the Rs 450 crore, each GH would be allotted Rs 150 crore.
Of the Rs 150 crore, 80 per cent of the funding would come from the Central government, which will be used for constructing dedicated super speciality buildings in all the three GHs. While the equipment for the hospitals would be procured by the Centre, the cost would be borne by the state government.
According to GO No. 517 of 2018, passed for Thanjavur GH, the union government had allotted Rs 120 crore and utilising this the fund entire civil works would be completed. Of the balance Rs 30 crore, the state government had released Rs 15 crore toward purchase of equipment
The state government had appealed to the Centre for creation of 617 new posts, ranging from medical officers to ministerial staff, at a total cost of Rs 52.79 crore and central government too had accepted the request.
As far as the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai was concerned, the central government’s share in the Rs 150 crore is Rs 125 crore and the state government had demanded to create 529 posts, which might cost Rs 42.09 crore.
For Tirunelveli GH, the union government had allotted its share of Rs 120 crore. Like in the case of Thanjavur GH, the state government had released Rs 15 crore for this facility.
State government had requested the Centre to create 608 new posts for the super speciality facilities at a cost of Rs 51.82 crore, which again has been accepted.
