State helping Sterlite, charges TTV Dhinakaran

The report by the National Green Tribunal appointed committee on Sterlite is a setback to the Edappadi K Palaniswami government and the state is behaving in a friendly manner towards the proposed hydrocarbon projects and copper smelting plant, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran said in a statement.

Commenting on the closure of Sterlite, the AMMK leader said that the state took hasty decisions in the controversial issue and due to such half-hearted action the public fear that the plant which had polluted Thoothukudi for several years may be reopened. “The Chief Minister is not opposing any anti-public project mooted by the Centre and going by the developments in the Vedanta owned company case it appears that vested interests are working to reopen the plant,” Dhinakaran said.
If the state is serious about the welfare of the public the government should immediately take a cabinet decision and pass a resolution favouring the complete ban on smelting plants that pollute the environment, the statement said. Be it Mekedatu or Sterlite the state has failed till now and hardly there are efforts to address the issue, Dhinakaran added.
