Official sources revealed that the effort was the brain child of the district legal aid committee headed by district judge Maghizehendhi.
To mark of the National Constitution Day on November 26, the judge used his good offices to seek the help of all educational institutions in the district, including arts and engineering colleges, to create a record by making the maximum number of people take a Constitution-related pledge.
A total of 5.50 lakh students belonging to 2,154 government and government aided schools, 112 private schools and 154 arts/science and engineering colleges participated by taking a pledge to uphold, respect and safeguard the Constitution.
At the main function organised in the Tiruvannamalai Municipal Girls Higher Secondary School, Judge Maghizhendhi, trainee collector M Prathap and CEO V Jayakumar participated.
However, Collector KS Kandasamy was absent from the event. When asked, he said that his name was inadvertently left out in the invitation. Hence, he refrained from participating in the event, the Collector said.
