Level-crossing at New Town in Vaniyambadi to be reopened soon
The railway level crossing at New Town near Vaniyambadi, which was closed for construction of a road over bridge work more than a year ago, is to be reopened shortly. The decision was taken as the pending bridge work was not taken up immediately.

This crossing is the only access point for those entering the town from the national highway. As more than 120 trains cross the area in both directions, it resulted in the gate being closed frequently.
Hence, southern railway proposed a road over bridge estimated at Rs 16 crore. The tender was finalised and work allotted to a private contractor with a promise of the facility becoming operational in 18 months. The level crossing was closed for work on September 11, 2017 and a 20 feet trench was dug at the spot after which the work stopped completely.
What aggrieved the public was that in addition to more time being consumed to travel to places like Vellore and Alangayam, it also led excess ticket fare for the passengers.
Public vented their anger by plastering the town with posters over the closure of the level crossing for nearly a year. Labour Minister and local MLA Nilofer Khafeel spoke to railway officials over the facility. A case was also filed and the local court ordered opening of the gate on or before November 29 if the bridge at the crossing was not built. Work is now under way to ensure the opening of the level crossing on Nov 29.
