Swine flu testing lab need of the hour in GHs: Official
Empower, Centre for Consumer Education, Research and Advocacy, Thoothukudi, on Sunday has felt the need for laboratories in Government Hospitals to test swine flu fever cases. According to A Shankar, Executive Director of the Centre, “The recent outbreak of swine flu has claimed several lives at various districts. Hence, to protect the lives of people vulnerable to such fatal disease, testing laboratories were essentially required.” It was unfortunate that six persons died of swine flu in Kanniyakumari district so far and five persons succumbed to this disease in Tirunelveli district over the last few months.
Besides, three died of swine flu in Thoothukudi district in the recent past. Moreover, mysterious fever cases resulted in deaths of twenty-five patients in parts of the state, so far. Pointing out the recent deaths, he said, “Currently, the testing facility for swine flu is available in Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital only and patients from Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi and Kovilpatti with swine flu symptoms had no other alternative but to move from their localities to the lab in Tirunelveli to take swab test and blood samples.” He added that, as there was a huge rush in Tirunelveli GH, it causes delay in the test results. Hence, he stressed that flu fever testing labs should be made available in Government Hospitals in Asaripallam and Thuckalay in Kanniyakumari district, Thoothukudi and in Kovilpatti. Stressing on the same, a letter was forwarded to Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy.
