A tough challenge, say senior govt officials
Senior government officials, who were overseeing the efforts taken by the State Government to minimise the damage caused by Gaja, have said the latest cyclone to hit Tamil Nadu posed them a difficult challenge.

“While cyclone Thane inundated several areas in Cuddalore due to its heavy rainfall, the strong winds caused by Vardah brought down trees. However, Gaja had both the trait,” explained agriculture secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi, the nodal officer for flood mitigation in Cuddalore.
“Unlike the previous cyclones, Gaja lasted long damaging as many six districts. Further its movement towards the interior parts of TN is again a concern,” said Bedi, known for spearheading relief efforts in the district post the 2004 tsunami.
“More than 500 acres of land under cultivation in Cuddalore has been inundated, while the cultivation of banana crops in Dindigul, Tiruchy and Pudukkottai has been affected badly,” Bedi added.
“Gaja was challenging when compared to the previous cyclones, as it was periodically changing its speed and course. However, based on previous experiences, a lot of time was spent anticipating both the aspects of Gaja,” said K Satyagopal, CRA.
