The idea to launch such a vehicle was conceived by Ramakrishnan. It has been designed to “educate public on safety rules thereby ensuring safety of all road users.” However, when Sathuvachari police inspector I Pughazhendhi viewed the functions of the vehicle, he made a request to Ramakrishan that this facility should be put to use for the public.

When DT Next spoke to Ramakrishnan, he said, “the vehicle was initially designed as a private am-bulance and was later converted for this purpose. When a private operator sought permission to de-commission his 2000-model vehicle, we asked him whether he will help us in getting a similar vehicle for this purpose. The request was based on the suggestions of the transport commissioner and with required modifications. This vehicle was created to publicise traffic rules among the public,” Ramakrishnan added.

“The private operator offered his vehicle, after which necessary modifications were made at a cost of Rs 1 lakh and another Rs 65,000 was granted from the road safety fund to change the interior,” he added.

According to Pughazhendhi, the interior of the ve-hicle has a TV monitor connected to CCTV cam-eras and with this facility any two-wheeler number plate, even at a distance of 250 metres, could be easily read. The rear of the vehicle has a large LCD screen and there is a public address system on the front. With these facilities, awareness pro-grammes could also be conducted.

When in operation the monitor automatically captures and records passing vehicles. Pughazhendhi said, adding, “this facility will help us to identify two-wheeler offenders. The violators can’t escape as the CCTV will record the offence by any motorist.”
